Empowering Namibians through affordable housing initiatives

Access to affordable housing is increasingly recognised as a crucial driver of economic empowerment, social inclusion and community well-being.

In Namibia, the struggle for accessible housing continues amid challenges like poverty, inequality and limited access to basic services.

In response to these issues, the Namibia Mineworkers Investment Holdings Company (NAM-MIC) is taking steps to ensure that more Namibians have access to safe and affordable housing.

According to chairperson John Ndeutepo, affordable housing is not merely a basic need, but a fundamental right. At NAM-MIC, the focus is on ensuring that all Namibians have the opportunity to thrive through accessible, sustainable, and inclusive housing developments.

With over 60% of NAM-MIC's investments directed towards housing projects, the company is taking an active role in addressing the country's housing crisis, aligning with the Namibian housing policy that emphasises access to basic services and shelter as an inherent right.

Pathways to prosperity

NAM-MIC's housing investments extend to all parts of Namibia, reaching urban centres and remote areas alike. “By funding these projects, we are not only providing homes, but also creating jobs, stimulating local economies as well as forming a sense of community,” Ndeutepo said.

Statistics from the Namibia Statistics Agency indicate that a proportion of Namibians live in informal settlements, highlighting the urgency for affordable housing solutions.

The introduction of projects like those spearheaded by NAM-MIC contributes to alleviating this pressing issue by making housing more accessible to low-income citizens. Internationally, access to affordable housing has been shown to improve education and employment opportunities, ultimately driving economic growth.

The Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development pointed out that affordable housing directly impacts people's ability to pursue education and entrepreneurship. NAM-MIC's initiative aligns with this global perspective by not only providing shelter, but also supporting pathways to prosperity.

The company's housing efforts are also part of a broader strategy that aims to create long-term value for its shareholders.

In partnership with Namitvest, NAM-MIC is investing in multiple growth sectors to promote the long-term prosperity of Namibia. This approach aims at empowering Namibians both economically and socially, contributing to the country's overall progress.

“Affordable housing is more than just shelter; it is a foundation for empowerment,” Ndeutepo emphasised.

By focusing on low-income Namibians, NAM-MIC aims to provide homes that help individuals pursue their aspirations - whether in education, employment or entrepreneurship - thereby building stronger communities, he said.
