A decade to savour new friends, personal growth at Keurwyne
In an era of rapid career shifts, Sieggie van der Merwe offers a different perspective. For ten years, he has been a fixture at Keurwyne Liquor Store on Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue in Windhoek.
It is a decade defined by a transition from "learning the system" to mastering the delicate art of supply chains, team leadership and trend forecasting.
Looking back at day one, Van der Merwe's focus was simple: stocking shelves. Today, the role has expanded into a complex operation involving supplier negotiations and predicting the next big hit. "My rookie self was surprised by all the work that happens in the background to make this business work," Van der Merwe reflects.
The retail liquor sector is anything but static. Van der Merwe has navigated the "craft beer explosion", the "infused gin" craze, and the current wine era.
Beyond products, he has observed a profound cultural shift: "Ten years ago the industry was volume-driven, whereas today it is more value-driven." This change reflects a move from "drinking to forget" to "drinking with intent".
Soak it all up
What makes a decade fly by? For Van der Merwe, it is the team. Keurwyne is a 58-year-old institution where 90% of the staff have worked for more than a decade.
Van der Merwe describes the staff as "professional friends", a group so in sync that they support one another instinctively. This bond was vital during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing the team to adapt and protect their legacy.
The job has also sparked personal growth, transforming Van der Merwe into a more social person who values the regular customers who drop by the office just to chat.
