Asteria Shaninga: Keeping home affairs’ books balanced for 12 years
Asteria Shaninga, a financial accountant at the ministry of home affairs in Windhoek for the past 12 years, has quietly carried one of the organisation’s greatest responsibilities: managing its finances with accuracy, discipline and care. Her role goes beyond numbers on a page; it requires careful planning, accountability and constant attention to detail.
While many professionals move from role to role in search of growth, she chose consistency, proving that dedication can be just as powerful as promotion and that long-term commitment still holds value in today’s fast-changing professional world.
Working in accounting and finance requires patience, focus and integrity, qualities Shaninga has shown year after year.
“Being an accountant is about so much more than just dealing with money; it’s about trust and loyalty,” she says. “Through busy financial periods, tight deadlines, and changing systems, I have remained dependable and calm to make sure that every balance sheet is precise."
Her experience is not defined by titles but by trust built over time. Colleagues rely on her experience, and the organisation continues to benefit from her steady presence and company knowledge.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her many years in the department is mentoring younger employees and watching them grow professionally. “One of my favourite things about having many years of experience is when younger or new employees come to me for advice. The satisfaction that comes from that is one of the best parts of working in this department,” she explains.
“What stands out most is my growth in confidence. On my first day, I was eager but unsure. Today, I feel secure in my abilities and proud of the experience I’ve gained over the years,” she adds.
Her advice to upcoming accountants is simple: “Be patient, pay attention to detail, and never stop learning. Accounting requires integrity and responsibility. If you stay focused and committed, the experience you gain over time becomes your greatest strength.”
