IPYG inspires a generation of Namibian voices for peace and unity

Young Namibians, through the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), are taking part in leadership and peacebuilding programmes this year by organising community initiatives and training sessions that aim to promote unity, develop leadership skills and strengthen social cohesion across Namibia.

IPYG is an international youth organisation based in Windhoek that works with partners such as Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) to provide peace education, leadership training and platforms for collaboration among young people.

The organisation says youth are central to its mission because they represent a large and dynamic portion of the population, particularly in Namibia, where many young people are seeking opportunities to develop skills and contribute to society.

Through programmes such as the Youth Empowerment Peace Class, young participants are involved not only as attendees but also as organisers of community discussions, school activities and awareness campaigns focused on peace and cooperation.

“These programmes allow young people to take initiative and lead activities that address issues affecting their communities,” the organisation said.

Participants gain skills including leadership, communication, teamwork, public speaking and conflict resolution. These skills are seen as important for future careers in areas such as education, entrepreneurship, government and community development.

Global connections

International collaboration is also a key feature of IPYG’s work. Young Namibians connect with peers from other countries, sharing ideas and experiences on peacebuilding and social challenges. This exposure helps build global awareness and strengthens professional networks.

Despite these opportunities, young people still face challenges such as limited resources, lack of mentorship and restricted access to platforms.

IPYG says it addresses these gaps by providing training, guidance and opportunities to engage in both local and international initiatives.

The organisation encourages more support from institutions and stakeholders to help youth participate in global programmes, including assistance with travel, accommodation and visa processes.

Looking ahead, IPYG aims to expand access to peace education and increase youth participation in international platforms, with the goal of developing a generation of young leaders who actively contribute to peacebuilding and community development in Namibia and beyond.
