Mixed martial arts athlete: Veja Hinda
Namibian mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete Veja Hinda has not only won big titles, but has also inspired many young people.
Once proud of being named African Champion and the Namibian sportsman of the year in 2023 at Namibia Annual Sport Awards, beating top cyclist Vera Looser, the 27-year-old's greatest pride now comes from knowing he's helping sports grow in Namibia and across Africa.
“I've inspired so many people by what I’ve done so far, which in turn is helping the sport grow in Namibia and Africa as a whole,” he said.
According to Hinda, preparing for a competition is tough in terms of training, and requires a lot of commitment. “I train close to three times a day when preparing for a competition. My morning starts with a mix of strength and cardio exercises to build a strong body." But it's not just about being strong; he also works on his technique, making sure every move is perfect.
In the evening, he focuses on strategy, where he studies his opponents and plans his game strategy for fight day. Beyond physical training, he believes in the power of visualisation. "Visualise, visualise and visualise some more,” he emphasised.
“Paying attention is what I strive for, so I become familiar with the environment and pressure. When the actual competition happens, it feels like I have already been there and succeeded,” he explained.
MMA is rapidly gaining popularity in Namibia, attracting a new generation of athletes and fans. “The sport has grown in the last few years based on my observation and it seems like a lot more people are taking it seriously,” he said.
The sport combines techniques from various martial arts disciplines, including boxing, wrestling, judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, providing a comprehensive and intense competition environment.
On his plans for the future, Hinda said: "I believe I am exactly where I need to be, and I plan to go professional within the next year. I dream of representing my country in major international competitions".
