Inspiring future generations

Lukas Kandere, a teacher at Maurits Devenish Private School in Ongwediva, holds a Bachelor’s of Honours Degree in Education (Biology and language education) from the University of Namibia. Kandere completed his grade 12 at Etosha Secondary School in Tsumeb, where his journey towards becoming a high school teacher began.

Kandere said his inspiration to become a teacher stemmed from a combination of factors, including the desire to make a positive impact on learners’ lives, cultivate a love for learning, and share his passion for biology and languages (English and Afrikaans).

Supporting learners

Kandere uses various strategies to engage learners, especially those struggling or less interested in the subject matter.

“I spend time on interactive tools like YouTube for biology lessons, encouraging participation, quizzes, and real-time feedback,” he said.

As a proactive 21st-century teacher, Kandere observes learners as they enter the class, addresses signs of discord, and encourages positive interactions.

He added that humour helps diffuse situations and maintain a positive tone during lessons.

“Creating a supportive classroom environment is crucial for effective teaching. Kandere believes in setting clear behaviour expectations and consistently enforcing these standards to foster a respectful and focused atmosphere,’ he explained.

Staying updated

Kandere stressed the importance of continuous learning, which he believes is essential in his world of teaching.

“I attend workshops and conferences and regularly read professional journals to stay informed about emerging trends related to teaching,” he said.

He embraces adaptability, remains flexible to meet the evolving needs of learners, and is proud of his achievements.

“Being recognised as the best English teacher in the Oshana Region for NSSCO results last year and achieving a 100% pass rate for A to C symbols is something I am proud of,” Kandere said.

Secure environment

When it comes to classroom management and discipline, Kandere finds that maintaining consistency and fairness is crucial.

He emphasised that safety is a priority, ensuring a secure environment for all learners, especially during difficult moments.

He acknowledges students’ achievements and commendable efforts, highlighting specific skills or qualities they excel in.

“For areas needing development, I provide clear suggestions for improvement, and I tailor his feedback to each learner’s unique needs and learning style,” he concluded.
