Akpabio Eno steps into Unam leadership post

Akpabio Eno was appointed head of department for social sciences at the University of Namibia’s (Unam) School of Humanities, Society and Development in January.

“I first came to the University of Namibia as an external examiner in 2012, when I was still at the University of Dar es Salaam. I applied and got the position in November 2013, and I have been here since then," Eno said.

Eno believes his dedication played a role in his recent appointment.

“I believe that my commitment and passion over the years must have played a role,” he said.

He describes his new role as demanding but fulfilling, allowing him to engage with both students and staff.

“The role is dual in that I deal with students and staff. So, I am not completely divorced from my first love of imparting knowledge."

Professional experience

Bringing extensive professional experience, Eno has worked across academic institutions and spent more than six years in corporate communication.

He also serves as an international liaison for the International Association for Media and Communication Research.

“The experiences I have outlined, which span local, regional and international, have and will assist me in delivering on my remit,” Eno said.

Fairness and ethics

He described his leadership style as inclusive and service-oriented.

“I am democratic in outlook, with a slant towards servant leadership and an interest in coaching and mentoring,” Eno said.

Guided by fairness and ethics, he defines excellence as excelling in teaching, research and community service.

His vision aligns with Unam’s ambition “to be a future-oriented sustainable hub of excellence in higher education and innovation in Africa".

He also believes teamwork, professionalism and stakeholder engagement are vital.

“By putting in place goal-getters to drive the vision and mission,” he said, the department can thrive.

Personally, he draws motivation from his faith: “My faith in God is key, as this makes me strive for excellence to please Him.”

He concluded with a message of accessibility: “I have an open-door policy and a listening ear. I am ready to hear everyone out.”
