NamPost’s John Kooper drives service delivery in Mariental
John Kooper is an accomplished control postmaster at NamPost in Mariental, where he is recognised for his expertise in labour law, operational leadership and public service delivery.
His career spans more than ten years in Namibia’s postal and logistics sector, covering key operational, legal and management roles, where he has focused on value creation, integrity and people-centred leadership.
“I am hard-working, creative, committed, dedicated, trustworthy, and innovative in finding ways to develop and create opportunities, solve matters and add value to the market I serve,” Kooper says.
These principles underpin Kooper’s approach to leadership.
His strengths include persistence, the ability to work under pressure, quick learning, and a firm commitment to values and integrity. A visionary developer, he has a strong grounding in economic principles, research, and analytical skills, and remains committed to continuous self-development.
Educational background
Kooper completed his Grade 12 in 1993 at Jan Jonker Afrikaner Secondary School before pursuing higher education at the University of the Western Cape, where he earned a BComm (Law) degree and a certificate in business studies.
He later obtained a postgraduate diploma in labour law from the University of Johannesburg.
His professional development has also been strengthened through training in dispute resolution, industrial and labour relations, change management, finance, safety management, port operations and leadership.
“As a youth, I was fascinated by business or the commercial sector, but after entering that sector, I realised that the sector faces different legal regulations, and this became a barrier for upcoming businesses," he explains.
This insight motivated his transition into law, he adds.
Career trajectory
Since April 2016, Kooper has served as control postmaster at NamPost, where he oversees the management and operations of the Mariental area post offices. His responsibilities include ensuring operational efficiency and profitability, as well as overseeing marketing, financial management, staff supervision and stakeholder engagement.
His previous roles include employee and labour relations officer at NamPost, legal advisor at Labour Skill Solution, and chief cargo coordinator at NamPort.
"As the control postmaster of my area, the vision is to effectively communicate the company's mission and vision to achieve the core mission, vision and strategy initiatives of the company as a team," he says.
Sustainable delivery
Kooper defines success as “the place or time where preparation, hard work and commitment meet opportunity".
Guided by the values of integrity, accountability, caring and teamwork, he emphasises empowerment and education.
“As a leader, I mostly focus on empowering my team; each one teaches each one."
Through initiatives such as human capital audits, smartcard services, courier expansion and the development of mini post offices for rural communities, he continues to strengthen service accessibility and organisational impact, ensuring meaningful, sustainable delivery to the people he serves.
