Purpose by design: The case for purpose coaching

Many individuals and organisations are lately asking deeper questions about meaning, direction, and impact. Beyond professional success or financial achievement, people increasingly seek alignment between their values, their work, and the difference they hope to make in the world. This growing search for clarity and fulfilment has given rise to purpose coaching.

In 2022, I surveyed working women within the age group 25 to 45 for the purpose of developing a coaching framework.

The women surveyed revealed that they felt little satisfaction and fulfilment even though they were employed in their dream job. They felt like they were just going through the motions and getting nowhere. Furthermore, they spend day after day working in a job that drains or stresses them. They expressed a need for a reason to get up in the morning and a desire to feel like their life counts for something.

This begs the question: how many more individuals, men and women alike, in Namibia have similar feelings, particularly regarding finding meaning and purpose? Damon, Menon, and Bronk (2003) define purpose as “a stable and generalised intention to accomplish something both meaningful to the self and of consequence to the world beyond the self”.

A purpose coach works with individuals to help them discover, clarify and live out their unique purpose.

Purpose coaching does not only focus on professional advancement or skill development, it goes deeper. It explores questions such as: What truly motivates you? What strengths and experiences shape your contribution to the world? How can your passions and talents align with meaningful impact?

At its core, purpose coaching is about helping individuals reconnect with their authentic selves and make intentional decisions about their lives and careers.

Deeper sense of purpose

Purpose coaches guide clients through structured reflection, thoughtful questioning, and practical tools that enable them to uncover patterns in their experiences, values, and aspirations. Through this process, individuals often gain greater clarity about their direction, renewed motivation, and a deeper sense of confidence in the choices they make.

The relevance of purpose coaching extends beyond individuals. Organisations are increasingly recognising that employees who understand and connect with their sense of purpose tend to be more engaged, resilient, and innovative.

When personal purpose aligns with organisational vision, workplaces can foster environments where people feel inspired not only to perform but to contribute meaningfully.

Introducing a purpose coach into professional or community spaces can therefore serve as a catalyst for personal growth and collective impact.

By helping individuals articulate their purpose and align their actions with their values, purpose coaching encourages a culture of intentional leadership, personal accountability, and authentic contribution.

Ultimately, purpose is not a destination but an evolving journey. A purpose coach serves as a guide along that journey, helping individuals navigate moments of uncertainty, recognise opportunities for growth, and step more confidently into the roles they are meant to play.

In a world that often prioritises speed and productivity, purpose coaching reminds us of the importance of reflection, alignment, and meaning. By empowering individuals to live and work with intention, purpose coaches help shape not only more fulfilled individuals but also individuals who can best serve the world and its people, thus building stronger communities and organisations.
