Eveline Hanghome: A passion for numbers

Eveline Hanghome began working as an accountant at the Ministry of Works and Transport in February 2010. Since then, her role has evolved to include key responsibilities such as compiling budgets, reconciling financial reports, monitoring expenditures, and addressing audit queries. The knowledge she has accumulated since she began working at the ministry has become her calling – particularly in the area of helping to craft the ministry’s budget.

She says one of her proudest moments was being part of the team that helped deliver a comprehensive and accurate financial plan ahead of the national budget tabling process.

Although the task was challenging—with tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and high expectations—Hanghome says it taught her the value of teamwork, open communication and personal resilience.

“We were like a piece of a large puzzle, as our diverse expertise was essential in creating a comprehensive and accurate budget for the Ministry of Works and Transport.”

She says she is also an active contributor to the ministry’s positive culture, as well as to its focus on personal and professional development.

She values the supportive environment, the training opportunities, and the strong bonds she shares with her colleagues.

“We celebrate birthdays, milestones and accomplishments and create a supportive atmosphere, making connections with my colleagues and reinforcing positive relationships, which enhances collaboration and makes the workplace more enjoyable for me."

Personal growth

While Hanghome remains open to change and new experiences, she sees herself continuing her career in accounting. She believes in continuous efforts to strengthen her skills and expertise by pursuing relevant academic qualifications, attending workshops and training sessions, and staying informed about best practices and technological advancements in the field.

“I believe personal growth comes from embracing different opportunities and adapting to new situations. I will always appreciate the opportunities to grow as I work toward my goals and ambitions," she says.

In her free time, she values spending time with her family – especially during braais and beach outings in her hometown, Walvis Bay.

She balances her career with moments that enrich her personal life and enjoys music and meaningful conversations. Her favourite artists include Top Cheri, D-Kandjafa and Kangweson.

“In addition to these activities, I make sure to prioritise exercise to stay healthy, and I love engaging in meaningful conversations that allow me to learn and grow.”
