Mbako puts communication at the service of community

Nangula Mbako has built a career centred at the intersection of media, communication and community development.

Through the Nangula Mbako Foundation, her non-profit organisation, she supports youth through mentorship, workshops and community initiatives designed to build resilience and expand opportunity. 

Her work blends strategy, storytelling and social impact, shaped by a childhood lived between Namibia and the United States.

This cross-continental upbringing exposed her to a variety of perspectives, "allowing me to understand people beyond what is visible on the surface," she says.

Growing up in two cultures taught her adaptability and gave her a broader view of society.

She says her foundations are deeply rooted in faith, education and community, the things she believes continue to keep her grounded.

Communication as a powerful tool for change

Early on, Mbako discovered an interest in public engagement and the power of narrative.

"I realised that communication isn't just about information; it's about influence, connection and responsibility," she says.

Mbako's decision to pursue communication was intentional.

She recognised the role media and leadership play in shaping societies and creating opportunities for progress.

Today, she works across communication strategy, media projects and community-centred initiatives, with youth empowerment at the heart of her mission. To her, communication is not merely technical work, it is a tool for understanding, growth and social advancement.

Mbako studied both locally and abroad in communication, international relations and leadership studies. These fields deepened her understanding of global issues and the ways media and messaging inform development, policy and public perception.

Like many professionals, her journey has included moments of challenge.

Balancing responsibilities, adjusting to new environments and staying grounded through uncertainty have all shaped her path. She credits resilience and a strong sense of purpose. "You keep going because the work matters, and others are relying on you," Mbako says.

Looking ahead, Mbako aims to broaden her impact in leadership, communication and youth development. Her advice to young people is simple: "Stay curious, remain disciplined, invest in your growth, and hold firmly to your values."
