Omake charity uplifts lives in Otjiwarongo and beyond

The Omake Charity Organisation is a non-profit founded in 2018 and based in Otjiwarongo. Its core aim is to bring people together, create safe and uplifting spaces, and respond to the needs of the surrounding community.

Eddy Kgobetsi, co-founder and chairperson of Omake, said: “It’s about creating moments where hope is restored and reminding people that they are not alone.”

Omake was founded in response to a need for greater support and compassion within the community. What began on a small scale has since grown into an organisation that serves not only Otjiwarongo but also other parts of Namibia, including the coast, Windhoek and Oshakati.

“What started as small acts of kindness grew into a collective effort driven by empathy, unity and a belief that change begins when we show up for one another,” Kgobetsi explained.

Omake is involved in several projects, including providing meals, school clothing and essential supplies to underprivileged learners, distributing blankets and warm clothing to those in need, and feeding homeless people. Kgobetsi said the organisation’s work spans a range of initiatives aimed at making a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Reflecting on moments that reaffirm the importance of the work, he said it is often the quiet reactions that have the greatest impact.

“The relief in someone’s eyes when help arrives, the smiles or a silent 'thank you' from a mother who desires success for her offspring but doesn’t know where to start. Those moments reaffirm why this work matters and why we continue, even when challenges arise.”

Since its founding, Omake has evolved into a structured organisation with a clear mission and vision, supported by growing trust from the community.

“Each project has strengthened our capacity to serve more effectively. We’ve learned, adapted and have grown together, guided by the same heart that started it all.”

The charity also hopes to involve more young people in its programmes.

"By actively involving young people in our programmes, we want them to recognise how staying in school, developing strong values, and believing in their potential can help uplift their families and break the cycle of poverty,” Kgobetsi said.

Omake aims to build a permanent soup kitchen in Otjiwarongo, an early childhood development centre, and a residential welfare and disability facility to meet the diverse needs of the community. Its long-term goal is to expand the organisation to serve people across all regions of Namibia.
