Hona Hona transforms rural education opportunities
In rural Namibia, many talented learners lack the guidance, resources and opportunities to pursue further education. Hona Hona is changing that, providing mentorship, career guidance and life-skills support to empower students to overcome barriers and achieve their academic and career goals.
The initiative focuses on expanding access to information about tertiary education, exposing students to opportunities, and equipping them with the tools needed to pursue meaningful futures.
“Our aim is to restore hope, expand awareness and empower learners with the knowledge and confidence required to pursue higher education and meaningful career pathways,” the organisation explained. “We help them realise that their circumstances do not define their future and that there are, indeed, endless opportunities available to them.”
Career planning
The mission is to empower rural learners by providing motivation and structured guidance for transitioning into tertiary institutions.
Outreach programmes start with interactive icebreakers to create a safe, engaging environment before moving into practical sessions on career planning. Learners receive booklets explaining universities, colleges, vocational training, admission requirements, and point systems.
Hona Hona also encourages students to explore vocational and skills-based institutions aligned with their talents.
“Importantly, we emphasise that success is not limited to traditional academic routes,” the organisation said in a statement.
Long-term vision
The organisation’s impact is evident at Epukiro Secondary School. Once plagued by high teenage pregnancy rates and low academic performance, the school now ranks fourth nationally in the 2025 Namibia Senior Secondary results.
“This shift reflects not only improved pass rates but also positive changes in learner mindset, discipline, and long-term aspirations,” Hona Hona stated.
Limited staff and funding remain challenges for the young not-for-profit. Logistical support will expand outreach and provide resources like sanitary items and study materials. Over the next five years, Hona Hona aims to increase tertiary transitions by 50%, recruit 25 full-time volunteers, and launch mentorship and parental engagement programmes, driving long-term change for rural learners.
